How to Evaluate a Cloze Procedure Test

Cloze procedure is a method instructors use to assess reading comprehension and determine a student's reading level. Instructors choose a passage of about 100 to 150 words from a book or reading selection and then remove key vocabulary from the selection. The instructor then creates a word bank for students to draw from and places blanks in the passage where the words would normally be. As students read, they must self-monitor comprehension by choosing the correct words to fill-in the blanks. Assessing a cloze procedure test is merely the process of assessing how many words a student places correctly and then determining where that places them along a scale of proficiency.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a passage for the cloze procedure test that is appropriate for three levels of readers: proficient, partially proficient and advanced proficient. Selecting different passages is an important step for evaluating students with more precision than would occur if all students read the same passage. During the passage selection process, instructors also reflect on student comprehension levels and are better able to evaluate the cloze procedure test as an effective diagnostic tool.

    • 2

Verify that all vocabulary words chosen for the word bank are appropriate for assessment purposes. Some words in a passage are not essential and can be removed without detracting from the student's ability to comprehend the passage. In general, it's better to choose words that are unambiguous in their meaning and that students will recognize as essential for comprehending the passage.

Create a grade scale for the cloze procedure test. One way of doing this is to assign a number to each blank in the passage. For example, if students must fill in words for ten blanks, each blank would be numbered one through ten. Then, if a student correctly completes nine out of ten blanks, he or she would receive a score of ninety percent which is usually an A. Another way of doing this is to assign a point value to each blank with more points awarded for more difficult vocabulary words.
