Instruct children to use the ruler and square cardboard template to create squares on a sheet of paper. Squares should be two inches by two inches. Ask them to trace the squares in a ring around the outside edge of the paper. The center of each square needs to be on the paper, but edges can go off.
Tell children to make a dot on their paper, centered horizontally and slightly above center vertically. This dot is called the vanishing point. They will then use the ruler to draw straight lines connecting it to each corner of all the squares, without drawing through any squares. Make these lines light, as they will erase them later. Explain to children that all lines that depict depth radiate out from the vanishing point.
Instruct children to draw cubes using the lines previously drawn from the vanishing point. Parallel lines connect the vertical vanishing point lines.
Have children erase all the lines that are not part of a cube. Explain to them that these lines are used to help guide us in creating depth and should not be seen in the finished drawing. Next, draw holes in the cubes and then draw a rope entering and exiting each cube continuously.
Instruct children to trace the lines with a black marker once the drawing is finished. Give them colored pencils and show them how to use varying pressure for different shades of color. Color the original squares lightest, with darker colors as shadow on the other surfaces. Finally, tell the children to color the background.
