How to Assess Standards-Based Report Cards

Many schools are moving from report cards that give grades to standards-based report cards. Standards-based report cards list out the state standards specific to that grade level. The teacher rates the child based on teacher observations and in class assessments and marks on the report card if they are close to mastering the standard, if they have met it or if they are above it. Assessing your standards-based report card ensures that everything that needs to be covered and reported to the parent is done so.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at a copy of your state's standards for the grade level and subject area you are assessing. For example, if you are assessing second-grade math, provide a copy of the second-grade math standards for your state.

    • 2

Check that each standard put out by the state is listed on the standards-based report card.

    • 3

Ask what methods are used by the teachers to determine whether the child is below, near or at grade level. Written assessments, formal and informal observations and teacher observations are a few assessments that need to be implemented. The child is graded on the report card based on the child's results.

    • 4

Check that there is an option for marking on the report card each quarter or semester if the standard has not yet been introduced. For example, use the letter X to indicate what standard has not yet been covered.

    • 5

Analyze the rubric teachers use for grading students. Included in each rubric are four areas to show how the child is doing. Numbers or letters are used. For example, a 4 means the child is exceeding the standard, a 3 means they are at grade level, a 2 means they are near, while a 1 means they are well below.

    • 6

Check on the report card if there is an area where the child's social and study habits are assessed. All report cards must contain this area so the parents know how their child is doing in this area.
