How to Teach Classical Latin Objectives

Classical Latin ceased being a living language, a language that people speak and write as their first language, during the 5th Century A.D. Yet teachers and curriculum developers still find a place for Classical Latin instruction even 16 centuries later. The language of Vergil and Cicero remains a studied subject because it assists students in reaching certain objectives beyond learning Latin. Knowing how to teach the objectives allows you to customize your instruction in Classical Latin.

Instructions

    • 1

Develop clearly defined objectives for your class. Ask yourself what a student should be able to accomplish at the end of your class that he could not beforehand. Include concrete goals such as "translate short passages from Horace with a gloss" as well as more qualitative goals such as "improve knowledge of English grammar."

    • 2

Review each lesson plan while keeping your objectives in mind. Ask yourself which objective each lesson goes toward satisfying. Individual lessons might help students toward satisfying multiple goals. Write down on each lesson plan the objective or objectives that it fulfills.

    • 3

Check for lessons that you could relate to multiple objectives. Look for ways to expand your existing lesson plan with additional activities. For example, a lesson on the dative case could begin with an activity where students find the indirect object in English sentences.
