How to Deal With Student Misbehavior Due to Frustration

Frustration occurs when someone would like to do something, but cannot. It can be as difficult as being frustrated that you don't have enough money to buy a new house, or a simple as being frustrated that your stuttering means you cannot speak clearly. When frustration happens in a classroom, it can lead to challenging behavioral problems. There are some things that teachers can do to help frustrated students learn to cope and deal with bad behavior at the same time.

Instructions

    • 1

Isolate the cause of the behavior, or the underlying frustration. This might be obvious -- such as a student who cannot keep up with his class, or it might be hidden, such as a student who is frustrated that he cannot fix things at home.

    • 2

Make it clear to the student that the behavior is not acceptable, and will not be tolerated, even if it is caused by frustration. If the behavior impacted other students, make it clear to the other students that the behavior is not acceptable.

    • 3

Set forth the proper punishments for the behavior, according to your classroom or school rules. Make sure that whatever the consequences are for the behavior, the student is aware of them and that the consequences are met.

    • 4

Deal with the element of frustration after you have dealt with the behavior. If the frustration is such that it greatly impedes a student's ability to have good behavior, you might need to modify the punishments. For instance, if a student cannot communicate well and is very frustrated, they might yell or use a loud voice. In that instance, you would not use the same punishment as you would for a student who is able to communicate well but still chooses to yell in the classroom. Whatever the source of frustration is, deal with it before the student has a chance to vent his frustration with more misbehavior. A student might need counseling or one-on-one behavior modification to figure out the root of the frustration and to fix whatever that might be.
