How to Deal With a Difficult Teacher

Most teachers are wonderful, caring people. However, some teachers can be difficult. These teachers are hard to work with and understand. If your student finds a certain teacher impossible to deal with, it is time to step in. To deal with a difficult teacher requires patience, planning and a little good old fashioned psychology to bridge the communication gap.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up a meeting to talk with the teacher. Explain that you would like to discuss your student's struggles and find ways to resolve them. Let the teacher know that you are not attacking him, only looking for a way to help your student.

    • 2

Be on time for the meeting. Tell the teacher that you appreciate her efforts in the classroom. Identify the issues that you would like to discuss. Inform the teacher what problems your student is having. Be specific and clear in your explanations.

    • 3

Allow the teacher a chance to respond and listen to the teacher's side. Thank the teacher for being willing to address these difficult issues. Even if he does not seem like he cares, this will help soften the teacher to your point of view. If you find that you are doing most of the talking, you are not getting very far. It is more important to listen than talk.

    • 4

Suggest ways in which the student and teacher can improve their relationship. Be patient, even though the teacher seems unwilling to help.

    • 5

Ask to set up a meeting with the principal and the teacher, if, at last, the teacher does not want to help rectify the situation.
