How to Customize a Rubric

Rubrics are scoring guides used by teachers to focus on measuring learning objectives taught to students. Before students complete a learning activity, teachers should provide students with a rubric that communicates specific performance criteria arranged in levels to indicate the degree to which the learning objective will be scored. Rubrics can be customized specifically for any student project, process or performance that will be assessed.

    • 3

Type the "Category" heading in the first cell of the table. Below the "Category" heading, type the name of each category that will be assessed in the first cell of each row. For example, to assess writing skills you can develop categories such as focus, organization, spelling, punctuation, and completeness.

Type the scoring method you will use in the first row of the table. After typing the "Category" heading, press the tab key to type your scoring method for the remaining cells in the first row. Many rubrics will use the following scoring method: 4-Excellent, 3-Average, 2-Fair, and 1-Below average.
