How to Use the Flip Camcorder in Education

There are several characteristics that make the Flip camera a good classroom tool. They're inexpensive, simple to use and consistently shoot high-quality video and still photos. The device also shares photos and video quickly and easily, so it works with the flow of the classroom lesson plan. Get creative with how you use the Flip camcorder and you'll find that it can add endless value to the lessons and overall culture of the classroom.

Instructions

    • 1

Introduce students to the camera. Point out all of the parts of the Flip camcorder and demonstrate how to use it as both a still camera and a video camera.

    • 2

Allow students to handle the camera and figure out how to use it. If you have several cameras, students can be divided into groups so that each group has a camera.

    • 3

Ask students to develop a script that ties into one of their lessons. They can make all of the characters and props they need to create their scenes.

    • 4

Mount the Flip camcorder to a tripod or place it on a steady surface, like a table.

    • 5

Capture the scripted scene with the Flip camcorder. Hit the red "Record" button at the middle of the camera to start and stop recording.

    • 6

Allow students to take turns recording special events or classroom achievements, birthdays, spelling bees or special guests.

    • 7

Let each student use the Flip camcorder to record a day in their life.

    • 8

Use the USB adapter that is attached to the body of the Flip camcorder to plug the camera into a computer. The Flip software will automatically open up on the computer.

    • 9

Have students collaborate by editing their videos as a group. The scissor icon on the Flip software home screen will open the editing panel where students can cut, reorganize and add effects to their video.

    • 10

Teach students how to share their work online with sites like YouTube, Facebook and Vimeo. Select a video and hit the "Share" button on the Flip software home screen. The software will give you options for the online services you want to share video on and the privacy setting you want to assign to it.

    • 11

Have students collaborate on a compilation of all their footage. Burn a copy of the final video for each student and give them out as souvenirs at the end of the year.
