Take the loaf of dough out of the packaging. Remove from the refrigerator five minutes before you will begin coloring the dough. Divide the dough in to three equal sections. Place one section each in a bowl. Add five drops of food coloring per bowl. Have kids knead the food coloring in to the bread. Lay out the three pieces of dough and twist the bread together to form a braid. Bake according to package instructions.
Remove the braided bread from the oven and have kids see how the color changed in the bread. Explain that the white base of the bread lightened the food coloring. Cut through the bread and have kids examine sections of the bread where more than one color baked together, forming new colors throughout the bread. Let kids taste the bread to see how the taste remained the same, even though the color changed.
Remove the second tube of dough from the refrigerator. Stretch the dough out flat on a 9-by-13-inch baking sheet. Crack open one egg into a bowl and whisk the egg until foamy. Use a pastry brush to brush egg on the top of the bread. Mix up colored sugar by adding two to four drops of food coloring to one-half cup of sugar. Sprinkle the colored sugar over the dough and bake the bread. Let kids eat the sweet and colorful flat bread.
Have children make a edible project for the birds and critters living outside. Using stale sliced bread, place four to six drops of food coloring in to a bowl holding one-half cup of water. Kids soak the bread in the water to absorb the color. Place the wet, colored bread slices on a plate to dry overnight. Have the kids break the bread up and feed to the birds outside.
