Any language that is not meant to be taken literally. Poetic devices such as metaphor, simile, personification and hyperbole are all forms of figurative language.

The comparison of two unlike things using "like" or "as." For example, "You're as big as a house."
The comparison of two unlike things not using "like" or "as." For example, "Jane is a bear when she's angry."
Giving human-like qualities to an inanimate object. For example, "The sun woke up over the mountains."
Extreme exaggeration. For example, "I'm so hungry I could eat a horse."
