List of Poetic Devices for 7th Grade English

In many states, learning basic poetry devices is a part of the state standards for the 7th grade English curriculum. Teachers usually provide examples of these devices along with definitions. Students might be expected to define the terms, spot their usage in a poem, use the terms in their own poetry writing, or do a combination of all three.
  1. Figurative Language

    • Any language that is not meant to be taken literally. Poetic devices such as metaphor, simile, personification and hyperbole are all forms of figurative language.

    Alliteration

    • The repetition of the first consonant in a series of words. For example, "Sally sells sea shells at the sea shore."

    Assonance

    • The repetition of vowel sounds in a series of words. For example, "It beats, as it sweeps, as it cleans."

    Simile

    • The comparison of two unlike things using "like" or "as." For example, "You're as big as a house."

    Metaphor

    • The comparison of two unlike things not using "like" or "as." For example, "Jane is a bear when she's angry."

    Personification

    • Giving human-like qualities to an inanimate object. For example, "The sun woke up over the mountains."

    Hyperbole

    • Extreme exaggeration. For example, "I'm so hungry I could eat a horse."
