Students in Missouri will review six distinct segments of mathematics during their growth and development in the Missouri school system. Initially, students will develop problem solving skills such as identifying patterns, drawing pictures and making lists. They will also learn advanced mathematic fundamentals such as computing whole numbers, decimals, fractions and integers. They will also expand on their mathematical base by learning how to use calculators and interpret graphs to solve such problems or equations.
In the early stages of their studies in science, students will be introduced to a wide variety of tools and instruments used to measure and quantify results from scientific experiments or activities. They will also learn how to express the things they observe during such experiments in writing. Later, students will work with graphs and maps in addition to conducting statistical analysis of data. Students will also be conducting experiments and tests that involve manipulating one variable of the experiment on their own and presenting the findings in an unbiased and accurate manner.
The social studies curriculum of Missouri seeks to help students become more aware and active citizens. Teachers will attempt to help students hone their critical thinking skills by giving them assignments that will force them to analyze information, communicate ideas effectively and make informed decisions as responsible citizens. Students will also learn how people, groups, government officials and institutions are interrelated and their impact on the political system. Assignments and projects also seek to help students understand the importance of participating in public affairs on a local, state and national level.
Communication arts will help students enhance their literacy by becoming better readers, writers and listeners. Students will learn about various figurative language and literary techniques used in writings or speeches. They will also listen to and evaluate various mediums of communication in order to learn how to categorize and classify various themes and genres. Other activities will teach students how to gather, organize and process different ideas so that they will understand various viewpoints while being able to come to their own informed conclusions about certain topics or events.
