How to Develop Effective Teaching Practices as a Teacher

Good teaching doesn't just happen. It requires much work and is an ongoing process. Even educators who are in their 20th year of teaching know that there is always room for improvement. Teachers are trained in college to identify and define effective teaching practices. However, these practices are not developed until the teacher begins to apply them in the classroom.

Instructions

    • 1

Research teaching methods and become self-educated. Whether you're a first-year or a veteran teacher, you can never learn too much about practices like differentiated instruction, small-group interventions and cooperative learning. These are teaching methods based on research that shows children learn best when they work in groups based on similar academic ability. You need to know how to design instruction based on each child's instructional level. Look them up online or check out issues of educator's magazines in your school library.

    • 2

Participate in continuing education programs. Take advantage of any workshops or staff development meetings that your school district or state department of education hosts. Not only will you learn a lot, but you will get the opportunity to talk with other teachers about their methods and strategies.

    • 3

Evaluate your own teaching periodically. Use a form like the one available online at Edmonds School District's website. Examine your abilities in classroom management, instructional methods and knowledge of subject material. Jot down strengths and weaknesses in these areas. Ask your principal to give you feedback and suggestions based on their formal observations of your teaching. Review these evaluations to gauge your progress. This evaluation helps you reflect on areas that need improvement.

    • 4

Ask peers to evaluate you. Enlist co-workers whose opinions you respect. Get them to observe you several times during the semester and give you feedback. This is an effective tool for self-improvement if all parties understand that remarks are not personal, but intended for edification.
