How to Organize Parent-Teacher Home Visits

Parent-teacher home visits provide an opportunity for schools to reach out to students and their families in a more relaxed, informal atmosphere. Parents and teachers get acquainted and can discuss concerns in the privacy of the home. These visits help build a relationship of trust between the school and community and increase parental involvement in their child's education.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the date for the home visit(s). Some schools schedule visits prior to the beginning of the school year as a way for parents, teachers and students to meet each other. Your school may want to plan visits during the school year, so that parents who are unable to attend open house and parent night events will have a forum to address issues of concern.

    • 2

Call parents to set up specific times for the visits. If your school has a parent center office, the staff can contact parents. Most schools have teachers call parents individually so they can work out a mutually suitable meeting arrangement. This also is the best time to verify addresses and get directions.

    • 3

Establish a transportation plan. Check with your school's administrative office and ask if teachers can be reimbursed for fuel expenses if they have to use their own cars to visit parents. If your school has vehicles for official use, be sure they are available on the scheduled visitation dates.

    • 4

Follow-up on the visits. Send surveys home for parents to complete and give feedback on ways to improve future visits. Include space for address changes and time preferences to expedite the planning of additional home visits.
