Look up the home school laws for your state. Every state has different requirements for home schooling of children. Some states will have very strict laws regarding testing and notifications while others have less stringent laws. The Homeschool Legal Defense Association has information about every state's laws and the necessary steps for legality of home schooling. Always look at the laws of the state of residence. Take whatever legal actions are necessary by the state laws to start home schooling. For example, in the state of Texas, the only requirement is that parents must provide curriculum in reading, writing, grammar, math and good citizenship, but there are no further requirements. Other states, like New York, require the parent to submit a notice of intent to set up a home school within 14 days of starting, to fill out an Individualized Home Instruction Plan giving information like curriculum and the child's name and age, and reports on schooling. The state requires assessments on the child's education via achievement tests given by a qualified individual like a certified teacher.
Set up the best learning environment for the family and child. Home schooling allows the parent to set up lessons and environment according to the family's and children's needs. This means that parents can use school materials or can use hands-on teaching methods as appropriate for their needs.
Expect some changes to original plans. Home schooling differs for each family and methods of learning vary according to the needs of a family. Families do not need a structured lesson plan, but can use structure if it is appropriate for their family. If the original plan does not work, try working out a new plan.
Ensure state standards for education are met. While state laws vary, most states have set minimum educational standards that children must meet for their age. Ensure the children are learning the necessary skills for the state, especially if the state requires testing.
Take opportunities to teach children as they arise. Opportunities arise in a variety of situations, such as volunteering or going to events about various topics. Opportunities like going to a public speaking event can lead to further discussion.
Get children out in the community. It is not necessary to make children attend a school for them to socialize. Get children out in the community, such as taking ballet or karate lessons or volunteering. This will allow children to socialize with a wide range of age groups and individuals.
