Stretching is extremely important after physical activity, as it helps prevent injury and keeps muscles limber. Have the team engage in stretches during halftime. This not only keeps them in good condition, but also allows for some quiet time to refocus. The coach can also impart instruction for the game during the stretching.
To maintain energy during halftime, have the team engage in some spirit activities, such as cheers and chants. This can also include a round of thank-yous and compliments for their teammates. Have players say something positive about each of their teammates. Even players with poor skills contribute something.
Have the players practice drills during the half time. Shooting drills can help keep the game in mind and sharpen skills. The drills should not be anything too strenuous or involve heavy running. Shooting and passing drills are best.
If the team is scattered and not focused in the first half, they may be experiencing some mental stress and confusion. Organize a group meditation during the half. Have players sit comfortably and concentrate on breath. The coach can guide them through a focusing, relaxation or positive-visualization exercise. This can result in a mental reboot and leave players feeling refreshed with a clear head.
