Tips on Subtraction for 5th Graders

Fifth grade pupils should develop a strong understanding of mathematical concepts such as subtraction. Educators can introduce hands-on activities to help pupils maintain focus, build problem-solving skills and have an overall positive attitude toward learning. If educators help pupils comprehend the concept of subtraction, pupils will go on to perform better academically.
  1. Demonstration Techniques

    • Build interest in subtraction with the use of dice.

Educators should strive to model certain subtraction concepts using math manipulatives, such as blocks, pegboards and dice. When pupils are able to visually see a subtraction problem being worked out in front of them, they develop a stronger understanding and are more likely to be able to solve the problem at a later time on their own. Teachers should use these math manipulatives often in the classroom to reinforce subtraction-solving strategies.

    Online Learning

    • Add diversity to the learning process with online games.

Many fifth grade pupils enjoy using the computer. Several websites, such as Kids Numbers and Fun 4 the Brain can reinforce key math skills, while helping children continue to move forward at their own pace. These websites provide a source of motivation for pupils as they will want to get better at math in order to advance through the many grade levels. The introduction of technology during the learning process will help pupils become better at solving subtraction problems quickly.

    Money Matters

    • Educators should show pupils how subtraction is used daily whenever money is exchanged. The teacher could give each child a bag full of play money. As a class, pupils can practice making change for problems displayed on the board, read by the teacher or from a workbook. When students have a basic understanding, they could set up a restaurant in which subtraction would have to be used when the bill is paid for or another idea is to create a classroom store.

    Morning Review

    • A daily review of subtraction provides an effective way to revisit the concept in a short period of time. Every morning, pupils should answer two to three math questions that are displayed for them. This quick daily review will help students develop a confidence in solving these types of problems.
