How to Get Kids to Remember to Use Periods and Capital Letters in Writing

Young kids, particularly those with a learning disability such as dyslexia, can find it difficult to use correct punctuation and capitalization when writing. This includes omitting capitals at the start of a sentence and periods at the end. Consequently, they can struggle to reach writing standards in school. You can assist kids by guiding them through a number of exercises designed to promote the importance of good writing, and help them identify and correct mistakes in their writing.

Instructions

    • 1

Compose a short passage of five or six simple sentences that a child can easily read. Copy it without capitalization or periods and ask the children to read it. The difficulty in reading it can indicate to children the importance of proper punctuation and capitalization.

    • 2

Ask the kids to rewrite the passage with correct punctuation and capitalization. This gives them good experience in using capital letters and periods in their own writing.

    • 3

Ask the children to read samples of their own writing and annotate them with a red and a green pen or pencil. Green means "go" and indicates the start of a sentence, while "red" indicates the end. If a child has neglected to include a capital letter at the start or a period at the end, they must fix the mistake before circling it green or red.

    • 4

Reward the kids with stickers next to correctly used capital letters and periods.
