How to Make a Fluency Chart

Fluency charts measure reading fluency of English and other languages. They are often used in conjunction with multiple reading assignments and track the number of words per minute that the student can read over each reading assignment. The result is a matrix-like chart that maps out which reading exercises demonstrated high reading proficiency and which exercises proved to be more difficult for the student. If you're a reading educator, creating a fluency chart on your own can be a useful procedure to know.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your spreadsheet creation software and create a new spreadsheet that you will use to build the fluency chart.

    • 2

Type "Words per Minute" in the upper left-hand corner of the spreadsheet.

    • 3

Fill in rates of words per minute from the highest amount down to the lowest underneath the "Words per Minute" column. Start off at a number such as 180 and work your way down in increments of 10.

    • 4

Add a row to the bottom of the spreadsheet with "Reading Exercise" at the left-hand column directly below the lowest number of words per minute that are being recorded.

    • 5

Add numbers or names for the reading exercises in the columns next to "Reading Exercise", moving sequentially from left to right until you have all of the reading assignments covered in the spreadsheet.
