When introducing the student teacher to the students in your classroom, break the ice by playing a game that involves communicating with one another so the students feel comfortable in the presence of the new teacher. Play a game of "Telephone," or have the students guess the new teacher's "favorites" to encourage friendliness and provide the students an opportunity to get to know him before classwork begins.
Have the student teacher and those in your classroom write questions to ask each other on pieces of scrap paper. Fold the pieces of paper and place the questions into a hat. Have each student and the student teacher draw and answer questions to help everyone in the room get to know each other. Encourage the students to write serious or humorous questions, as long as each question is appropriate for the entire classroom.
At the end of a class day, set aside an hour or two, if possible, to introduce the new student teacher to your room. The welcoming "party" might include pizza and snacks you and the students provide. Ask the new student teacher to introduce herself by explaining her education and why she became a teacher. She may also mention her favorite hobbies. Give the students an overview of upcoming lessons and projects you plan to complete with the student teacher and how she will help with the lessons.
Host a simple overview of classroom rules for the student teacher while also highlighting the lessons and subjects you plan to cover during the semester or school year. Introduce each of the students and have them express an individual quality or trait about themselves to the student teacher. Ask the new student teacher to share her own interests, hobbies and favorite subjects with the classroom to get to know the students better.
