The evaluator is observing how well the teacher plans the lessons. While subject and pedagogical knowledge are included in the observation, knowledge of the students and their abilities is also rated. Teachers are rated on use of all available resources as well as designing student friendly lessons and assessments. It is also important for teachers to set clear instructional outcomes.
The environment which is organized by the teacher is rated in the evaluation. The classroom must promote learning in every aspect, from setup to available space. The physical space must be organized. The teacher must have control of the room, setting standards for student behavior. The room must have a culture of learning through its setup and teacher actions. Classroom procedures must be managed by the teacher.
Instruction includes the teacher's ability to engage the students in the learning process. A teacher who encourages question and answer sessions will receive higher marks in this section. The flexibility in response to student queries or issues is rated on the evaluation. Teacher assessments and their use within daily instruction is important for the summative teacher evaluation as well.
The professional responsibilities section reaches outside the teaching aspect of the classroom. The evaluator will check teacher records to make sure they are up to date. Participation in a professional community which helps teachers continue to learn about their field is highly recommended for this evaluation. Communication with parents is also documented here; if it does not happen the teacher will receive a low mark.
