Cultural Awareness Bulletin Board Ideas

To teach students about the importance of understanding other cultures, create a bulletin board that promotes cultural awareness. To get students and their families involved in this effort, ask them to share information about their culture. To vary the content, change the board often.
  1. People of the World Collage

    • Represent people of several ethnicities with a student-made collage. Cover a bulletin board with paper and write "People of the World" on top. Give students various magazines that depict people from all over the world. Ask students to cut out photographs of people and use a glue stick to attach these photos to the board for a collage. Make certain to represent various ethnicities.

    Meet My Family

    • Spotlight your students' families on a bulletin board. Each week, highlight a different family by posting pictures of important family events. Make note of each family's favorite foods, games and activities. Ask each family to create a family tree and to provide pictures of the student's close family members. Ask each family to contribute information about where their family originates and to share information about their family customs.

    Map

    • Show the diversity of your school with a bulletin board map. Print out a large map and attach it to a bulletin board. Take photos of students and teachers and ask them where they are from. Place the photos on the appropriate locations, then attach a string from the photos to the school's location, if applicable.

    Recommended Reading

    • Partner with your school librarian to create a bulletin board that suggests books which depict diverse cultures for students. Ask students to read the book and to offer their reviews or create artwork inspired by the books. Include a short summary, an author biography and examples of book illustrations.
