Heritage Bulletin Board Ideas

Heritage is an important concept to teach children. Learning about the people who came before him can teach a child a lot about himself. Teaching children about their heritage can bring them understanding about themselves and pride in their roots. There are various types of heritage that can be highlighted on a bulletin board.
  1. National Heritage

    • American citizens can celebrate their heritage with a patriotic-themed bulletin board. Feature images of George Washington and prominent figures from United States history. Write brief descriptions about who is featured in each image as well as his contribution to the country. Feature American landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty and Mount Rushmore as well. In addition, consider celebrating other cultural heritages as well. Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15) by featuring pictures of Hispanic men and women who have positively contributed to American society. Celebrate African-American History Month (February) by featuring politicians and other people of African descent who have made notable contributions to American society.

    Family Heritage

    • Help students learn about their family heritage. Make a large brown tree trunk at the the center of a bulletin board. Ask children what countries their families hail from. Add a flag from each nation that is represented. The flags can act as the leaves for the tree. Some children will have family from several different nations and should have a flag from each country. Beware that some children may not know their heritage due to adoption or being in foster care. If your class consists of students who may not know their family heritage, have children draw self-portraits and add those to the tree instead of flags. The tree will represent the concept that though we are all different, we come from the same roots and have much in common.

    Christian Heritage

    • A Christian school or church can celebrate its Christian heritage with bulletin boards. Use biblical themes to create an attractive board that highlights Christian history. Create a bulletin board to look like a photo album. For a church, add pictures from when the church first started and for a school, feature photos of some of the alumni. Write "Family of God Album" on the top of the bulletin board. Another way to show Christian heritage is to create a bulletin board that features photos of prominent Christian leaders. Founding fathers of the church or school, prominent missionaries and other important people in the Christian faith should be featured. Add an image of the cross to the center of the bulletin board to represent that all believers are a part of the family of God.

    Other Heritage Bulletin Board Ideas

    • Female students can explore their heritage as women by helping to create a women's heritage bulletin board. Have every student bring a picture of a woman she admires and who has helped to form the community, has made a significant contribution to society or who has been a personal heroine. Have a pink background and add the pictures along with a name tag below the photos. Or, celebrate regional heritage by creating a bulletin board that features a time line for your state, county, city or school.
