How to Make Papier Mache for Teachers

A fun and relatively easy craft that teachers often use in the classroom is papier mache. This is a gluelike substance that hardens as it dries. When it dries, students paint the objects. Papier mache is used to make many objects, including pinatas, boxes, model houses and model volcanoes, and can be used with many unit studies to help students learn more about a subject. It's also a fun activity for both children and teachers.

Instructions

  1. Cooking Recipe

    • 1

Mix 1/2 cup flour with 2 cups cold water in a small bowl. Stir well to combine these ingredients.

    • 2

Boil 2 cups of water. As soon as the water is boiling, add the first mixture to the boiling water. Bring this mixture to a boil again.

    • 3

Remove from heat. As soon as the mixture is boiling, shut off the burner and stir in 3 tbsp. of sugar.

    • 4

Let the mixture cool. As it cools, it will begin to thicken. When it is cool and thick, it's ready to be used. Store it in an airtight container until you're ready to use it.

    Non-Cook Recipe

    • 5

Place 2 cups of water in a bowl. You can also use more if you are making papier mache for a lot of projects.

    • 6

Add water, a little at a time. As you are adding water, mix the ingredients together until the mixture is a soupy paste.

    • 7

Store the mixture in an airtight container. When you are ready to use it, open the container. Add a little more water if it is too thick.

    Using Papier Mache

    • 8

Decide what object you will make. The objects can be whatever the teacher tells the students to do. If the study is about Earth, the students can make a mountain, volcano or tree.

    • 9

      Cut newspapers into strips.

    • 10

Dip the strips into the papier mache. Place the dipped strips of paper all around the project until it is completely covered.

    • 11

Let it dry. After it is dry, paint the object.
