How to Deal With a Classroom of Mixed Level Students

Dealing with a mixed-level classroom was once a requirement for all teachers. One-room schoolhouses dotted the landscape of early America and a single teacher taught all the town's children. Today multilevel, yet same-age, classrooms are found in most public schools, but it is rare that teachers deal with the range of levels in their classrooms effectively. Whether you are dealing with a mixed-age and mixed-level classroom or just a classroom of same-age students with a variety of abilities, you can learn ways to deal with and make the most of your classroom situation.

Instructions

    • 1

Teach content subjects such as science and history with the entire class. Provide your students with materials on their level that correspond with the lesson being taught. For example, when teach a lesson on Christopher Columbus you can provide students on a primary school level with an easy reader or two, while you can provide secondary students with a research project on why Columbus decided to sail across the ocean.

    • 2

Teach higher-level students math and grammar while lower-level students are occupied with hands-on activities. Spend a few minutes getting your lower-level students started and have multiple older students check on their progress throughout the lesson.

    • 3

Utilize higher-level students as tutors throughout the classroom. Ensure the students do not mind being tutors before assigning them to struggling lower-level students.

    • 4

Keep items that will enhance your students' learning on all levels available in your classroom. These materials will allow you to provide more advanced materials to students who grasp the concept of the lesson quickly so they do not become bored while other students complete the lesson.
