Projects for Remember the Titans

"Remember the Titans" is an inspirational film based on a true story set in Alexandria, Virginia in 1971. When a school board makes the decision to integrate the black and white schools, the football teams are thrown together as well. After a physical and metaphorical journey, the coaches and players realize that there is more to each other than skin color. This film is ideal for school projects because of its focus on racism and civil rights.
  1. School Integration

    • Find documented cases of integrated schools in the early 1970s. Make a chart detailing their progress throughout the years after the integration took place. What actions did the schools take to assimilate the students? Compare them to "Remember the Titans." Were there any cases similar to that story? If possible, contact graduates from this time and interview them.

    Leadership Qualities

    • Several people in the film demonstrate leadership qualities. Identify them and what qualities they possessed that set them apart. What methods did they use to influence others? Did they use their authority to achieve positive or negative things? Study leaders in today's society. Are there any that use a similar leadership style to any of the leaders in the movie?

    Exploring Racism

    • Racism is one of the major themes of "Remember the Titans." In the film, it is prevalent in all parts of society, including the school, the home and the community. It is not absent from religion, the work place or the playing fields. Identify specific cases of racism in the film and compare with the decades that followed. What has improved? What hasn't? Identify cases of racism still present in today's society.

    Overcoming Differences

    • At the start of "Remember the Titans," the characters were faced with what seemed to them an insurmountable difference. After being forced to spend time together at football camp, they realized that they had more in common than they knew. There is not a decade or a generation that escapes from the sting of prejudice, whether it is related to race, religion or nationality. Find someone who differs from you in each of these categories and spend time getting to know them. Identify things you have in common with each person.
