Double Addition Math Games

Double addition involves adding identical numbers to create a sum. For example, the number 8 can be made by adding two 4s. An understanding of double addition provides students with shortcuts for learning math through the memorization of basic equations. Games include equation and sum identification, using different game mediums such as dice and dominoes.
  1. Doubles Hopscotch

    • Doubles hopscotch is an active, outdoor alternative for learning doubles addition. For the game, teachers use sidewalk chalk to draw a 4-by-4-foot grid, with 16 squares containing double addition sums. The teacher reads a double addition equation to a student, who must solve it and jump to the correct answer on the grid. For example, if the question asks the sum of 10 + 10, then the student jumps to the square containing the number 20. The student continues until he gives an incorrect answer, or has landed on all the sums.

    Equation Identification

    • Identification games teach students to recognize double addition equations through sums. Games can be formulated for small group or classroom activities. Each student is provided with a dry erase board and marker. The teacher or a group leader calls out a sum and students must write the correct double addition equation which adds up to the sum. For example, students are asked to identify the double addition equation for the number 8, which is 4 + 4. After all the students in the class or group write an answer, those who are correct are rewarded points. At the end of the game, points are tallied and the winning individual or team is rewarded.

    Roll of the Dice

    • Dice games offer students the opportunity to practice identifying double number pairs and double addition sums. Each student is provided with a single die with the numbers 1 to 6 or, for older children, the die is altered to have the numbers 4 to 9. As students roll a number, they provide the sum of the doubled number. To reward success, teachers can tally scores or use visual measurements such as game boards. Twelve square game boards are printed with the numbers 1 to 12 in each square. As students double the dice number correctly, they mark off the sum number on the board. The student with the most marked squares is declared the winner.

    Double Dominoes

    • Double addition games with dominoes are a quick activity that can be performed several times during a class period. Students are given six dominoes, and instructed to lay them face down on the desk. As they pick up the dominoes, they look for double addition combinations and write down the equations and sums. For example, a domino with 14 dots is the double addition equation 7 + 7 = 14. When dominoes are not double addition combinations they are set aside and replaced with another domino.
