How to Help Second Graders Write Numbers the Right Way

Parents are so proud when their kindergartner brings home his first handwritten note even though he wrote the "L" in love backwards and misspelled "Mommy." By second grade, however, children should be able to write their numbers and capital and lowercase letters correctly. Mirror, or backwards, letters and numbers can be one indication of dyslexia or dysgraphia in young children. If you are concerned about your child's writing, speak with his teacher and the school counselor.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a sticker at the left-hand corner of your child's math assignment to remind him of the side of the paper where numbers should start. Give him a second sticker when his assignment is complete to reward a job well done.

    • 2

Write the numbers "1" through "10" on a big sheet of paper and have your child trace over your writing. Focus on the numbers "2" and "5," and "6" and "9," since they are commonly confused.

    • 3

Write the numbers "1" through "10" on a sheet of paper, laminate it and set it as a place mat on the dinner table. Encourage your child to trace the numbers with his finger while he eats.

    • 4

Offer visual and tactile learning tools. For instance, encourage him to draw faces on each of the numbers to make them unique. Or, give him rewards for each number he writes correctly -- two raisins for the number two, five candies for the number five, and so on.
