How to Design a Stem & Leaf Display for Simple Math

Stem and leaf plots are a form of data representation in the area of data analysis and statistics. Although data is traditionally displayed in line, pie and bar graphs, elementary students are still required to learn how to display data using a stem and leaf plot. The leaf is represented by the numbers in the ones place. The stem represents all other place values (tens and hundreds).

Instructions

    • 1

      Write the numbers in order from least to greatest. For example, 11, 12, 12, 15, 24, 27, 35, 52, 119

    • 2

Draw a vertical line on a sheet of paper. The length of the line depends on the number of numbers that will be recorded and how size of your script.

    • 3

Place the tens (or greater) digit on the left side of the line vertically in ascending order. These digits represent the "stems." For example:

      1 I

      2 I

      3 I

      5 I

      11 I

    • 4

Place the ones digit for each number on the right side of each line. These numbers represent the "leaves." For example:

      1 I 1 2 2 5

      2 I 4 7

      3 I 5

      5 I 2

      11 I 9

    • 5

Make a key to indicate the place values of the stems and leaves. For example, the following represents 119:

      11 I 9
