How to Make a Bird Feeder Lesson for High School

A bird feeder is a craft that can be easily made in a high school classroom. The project is ideal for an art or shop class, and the finished feeders can be hung in a school courtyard to beautify and bring some nature to the area. Start the lesson with a blueprint project so that students can create and be graded on their plans for the feeder, then let students create a wood feeder using a few woodworking materials and tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Pass out a sheet of graph paper to each student. Have students draw out the plans for their bird feeders, including notes on how long the pieces of wood will be and how many nails will secure each side. Have students turn in their plans and give each a grade.

    • 2

Pass the plans back to each respective student and lay out wood pieces, hammers, nails, sand paper, hand saws and wood glue so students can get started building.

    • 3

Oversee the bird feeder building process. Make sure students sand their wood pieces so there are no rough edges or splinters and observe as they use the hand saws so there are no accidents.

    • 4

Provide guidance if students get stuck and can't figure out how to finish their bird feeders.

    • 5

Collect the finished bird feeders and give each student a grade based on how well they constructed their feeder.

    • 6

Let students fill their feeders with nuts, seeds and peanut butter, then let students hang their feeders outside.
