How to Calculate Equivalent Fractions, Decimals & Percents

Fractions, decimals and percentages are mathematical terms that are related because they express amounts that are a portion of a whole number. In middle school, high school or college classes, or in everyday life such as figuring percentages while shopping, you can use formulas to convert from one form to another.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down the initial value, whether a decimal, fraction or percentage.

    • 2

Multiply the initial value by the applicable conversion factor.

    • 3

Convert a percentage to the equivalent fraction by placing the percentage as the numerator in a fraction whose denominator is 100. For example, 25 percent equals 25/100. Reduce the fraction if possible. The fraction 25/100 can be reduced to 1/4. Convert a percentage to the equivalent decimal by placing a decimal point two places to the left of the ones column of the percentage. For example, 25 percent would become 0.25, and 7 percent would become 0.07.

    • 4

Convert a fraction to the equivalent percentage by dividing the numerator by the denominator and multiplying by 100. For the fraction 3/5, divide 3 by 5 to get 0.6. Multiply this by 100 to get 60 percent. Convert a fraction to the equivalent decimal by dividing the numerator by the denominator. The fraction 7/12 would become 0.583.

    • 5

Convert a decimal to the equivalent fraction by counting the number of digits after the decimal point, then removing the decimal point and placing the number in the numerator. Write 1 in the denominator, followed by the same number of zeros as the number of places after the decimal. The decimal 0.555 would become 555/1000, which can be reduced to 111/200. Convert a decimal to the equivalent percentage by moving the decimal point two place values to the right. The decimal 0.849 would become 84.9 percent.
