How to Teach Preschoolers to Write the Letter B

It can be challenging for children to write the letter B. Writing a B requires children to be able to make a straight line and be comfortable creating circular curves. Children need to patiently practice to master their penmanship. Writing the letter over and over can get boring, so varying the media and writing implements with which they work will help keep the children's attention and make practice more fun.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a staff liner to draw horizontal lines on the blackboard that look similar to composition paper lines. Draw a letter B, but use a different colored chalk for each part of the letter. For example, draw the line in blue, create the top loop in yellow, and the bottom loop in pink.

    • 2

Identify the steps in making the B. Put a small numeral one at the top of the line, and accompany it with an arrow to show that the line starts at the top and the chalk line is made downward. Write the number two by the top loop, and accompany it with an arrow showing the direction the chalk followed to create it. Write a three by the lower loop, and use an arrow to show where the loop starts and the direction to draw it.

    • 3

Make a few dotted lines and circles on the blackboard. Call on students to trace them with chalk. If any children have difficulty holding the chalk, let them trace the letter with a finger.

    • 4

Prepare worksheets with dotted B's. Encourage students to practice tracing the B's.

    • 5

Walk around the room and monitor the children's progress tracing B's. As they master tracing them, tell them to write a few B's of their own.
