Fun Homework Ideas for Spelling Words

Getting children to do spelling homework can be a challenge, but there are ways to make it more fun while they learn the words. With your child, set aside a specific time each day to study spelling words. If they have a say in when they do their homework, they may be less likely to argue about it. Also, limit the amount of time, especially if the child is young. A short amount of studying every day is better than doing a lot only once per week.
  1. Word Search

    • Get a sheet of graph paper and write your child's spelling words out in all different directions. Fill in the spaces with random letters to create a word search puzzle. Be sure to include some incorrect spellings of the words in among the spare letters to keep your child on her toes. See how quickly she can find the correct words. Create different word searches so your child has one to work on each day.

    Alphabetize

    • Write each spelling word on a separate scrap of paper and place them all face down on a table. Have your child turn over the words and try to place them in alphabetical order as quickly as possible. Do this every day during her study time to see if she can improve her time.

    Concentration

    • Cut paper into squares and write each spelling word on two squares, so the first part of the word is on one and the second part on another one. Lay all the squares on a table face down. Have your child turn over two squares at a time. If they create a word, she can keep going. If not, she has to turn them over and start again. Repeat every day, mixing up the pieces of paper.

    Cut and Paste

    • Give your child a section of the day's newspaper or an old magazine and have her cut out letters from the paper to create all of the spelling words on her list. She can glue the words on a separate piece of paper.
