Instead of writing out the words with pen or pencil, create fancy words by spelling them out with letters from printed sources. Review the list of spelling words with your child and provide him with an old magazine, a newspaper or a circular. Encourage your child to search through the printed source and cut out letters that he can use to spell out the words on his spelling list. After he's collected his letters, have him glue them to a piece of paper, spelling out the words on his list.
Another approach that you can use at home to practice spelling words is to have your child write in substances rather than on paper. Choose a substance: pudding, hair gel, shaving cream or sand, perhaps. Spread the substance on a cookie sheet, state a spelling word and instruct your child to use her finger to write the word in the substance. To erase the word, she simply needs to use her hand to smooth out the substance, and she can continue to practice writing more words.
With this spelling activity, your child must fill in the blanks to spell the words correctly. On paper, write out dashes that represent the number of letters in a spelling word and fill in only a few of the dashes: the first, middle and last letter, for example. Your child must try to figure out what the spelling word is by filling in the blanks. Once he's figured out one word, move onto another word by creating more lines and filling in only a few letters on those lines.
Have your child unscramble the letters in her spelling words to figure out each of the words on her spelling list. Rewrite your child's spelling list, but write the letters in each word out of order. Provide your child with the list. She must try to unscramble and spell them properly to determine the correct spelling.
