First Grade Spelling Word Practice Ideas

The traditional method of practicing spelling words is writing the words ten times each and memorizing their spellings. However, this method is not effective for all learners. Some children learn best by using hands-on materials. Other children are talented artists and can use art to learn their spelling words. You can also use online websites to help students practice their weekly words.
  1. Hands-on Fun

    • Hands-on spelling activities are an effective way to teach kids their spelling words. One idea is to have your child use alphabet macaroni or alphabet cereal to spell their words. Your child will also love using ABC stamps to create their spelling words. If you have alphabet magnets, have him spell his words on the refrigerator or a cookie sheet.

    Messy Materials

    • There's nothing more fun to a child than making a mess. Give your child a small squirt of shaving cream on a table or cookie sheet and have her create her spelling words. You can also bury letters in a sand table and have her find the letters to make her spelling words. A new tool you can use are Crayola window markers. These markers allow your child to write their words on a window and you can easily clean the window off.

    Artsy Words

    • If you child loves art, these spelling activities will be sure to gain his interest. Have your child mold his spelling words with Play-Doh or clay. If you have watercolor paint on hand, have him write his words with white crayon on a piece of white paper. When the words are painted over with watercolor paint, the crayon resists the paint and stands out. You can also have him cut letters out of magazines or newspapers to create his spelling words.

    Spelling City

    • An interactive website for spelling practice, Spelling City offers a variety of games to help children practice their spelling words. When you enter the website, enter your child's spelling words for the week. Then she can practice the words. "HangMouse" is a kid-friendly version of Hangman. Your child can also do an online wordsearch, unscramble words and sentences and put words in ABC order.
