How to Type Bible Verse Numbers

A variety of written papers may need Bible citations to support your writing or provide background information. For example, when writing an essay, a thesis or even a sermon, citing Bible scriptures adds credibility and strengthens your work. Reference a Bible verse in text by typing Bible verse numbers to enable readers to find the passages you cite in the Bible as they read your writing.

Instructions

    • 1

Type the book of the Bible, capitalizing the first letter of the book. For example, write "Exodus" or "Romans." If the book of the Bible has a number in it, use an Arabic numeral -- "1 Peter" -- unless the book begins a sentence -- "First Peter".

    • 2

Enter the chapter number in Arabic numerals after one space. For example, write "Genesis 4" or "Luke 2".

    • 3

Place a colon immediately following the chapter number -- "Daniel 3:" -- no spaces.

    • 4

Add the verse number or numbers immediately after the colon, without spaces. For example, write "Ezekiel 2:1." Use a hyphen to indicate more than one verse -- "Galatians 1:1-3". Mark separate verse references with a comma -- "Ephesians 3:4, 8".

    • 5

Separate individual Bible references with semicolons -- "John 4:9; Matthew 6:2-9".
