Help your little one make her favorite craft. You might make finger puppets together and then put on a show, or you could create bookmarks with quotes from your favorite books and then read your child his favorite story. With older children, work on a decoration for the home, such as a hand-painted haunted house for Halloween or a new wreath to put on the front door for Christmas.
If you have not yet started making dinner, invite your child to join you. Assign small tasks that he can do, or let an older child make the majority of the meal. Even if dinner is already prepared, you could still make lunch or a snack together. Bake Christmas cookies with one another or prepare a cake for an upcoming birthday party or a special event at home, school, church or in the community.
Head to the local beach, zoo or amusement park if there are any in your area. You could simply go for a walk around the block or in the park to get some fresh air as well. Set up the sprinkler system outside or take a dip in the pool together to cool off on a hot summer day. If your kids love sports, let them practice their dribbling or hitting skills with you at a park.
Bring out some of the board games that you have not played in awhile and have a family game day or night. You could also play games, such as 20 Questions, Hangman or Tic-Tac-Toe. Older children might enjoy working on a crossword puzzle with you. See if you and your children could create a new game together, whether you create an actual board or a thinking game.
