Bilingual Activities for Kids

Learning more than one language is beneficial to children cognitively. According to the Society for Neuroscience, bilingualism, or the fluency of two languages, improves concentration and may prevent brain disorders, such as dementia. To reap these benefits, create bilingual activities for kids. Learning more than one language can be easier for younger children and it increases the likelihood of true fluency of both languages.
  1. Songs

    • Singing songs helps teach children new vocabulary, and the accompanying melody of the music helps them remember the lyrics. Many English songs can be translated into other languages, and many foreign songs can be changed into English. One way to reinforce bilingualism is to the sing the songs in both languages. Children learn both versions, and the songs should be repeated so the children know them by memory.

    Books

    • Many picture books are available in two languages side-by-side. Parents and educators can read the books to children in each language or choose certain words to say in the less dominant language. For example, if reading a children's picture book, the reader can choose to use the foreign words when there is an accompanying illustration. Older readers can pick out books in another language that they have already read in English.

    Games

    • A fun way to reinforce bilingualism is to use games for kids. Choose games that stimulate speech, such as the game of charades when a group guesses what one player is trying to express without words. Bilingual board games are available or use English games and set a rule to play it while speaking in another language. Younger children can play simple games to improve vocabulary, such as numbers and parts of the body. Websites, such as I read Italian and Abroad Languages, offer free simple online games for older children to work on bilingualism.

    Holidays

    • Celebrate the holidays of the countries where the languages you are teaching are spoke. For example, celebrate Chinese New Year when teaching Chinese. Holidays increase vocabulary words and educate children about important cultural references. While celebrating the holiday, introduce special festival foods and native costumes. Cook noodles and steamed fish for Chinese New Year. Craft activities can also accompany the holiday celebration. Children would construct paper dragons for Chinese New Year and learn about Chinese astrology.
