Finding volumes from ratios is useful in cooking. For example, if you want to make only half of a recipe, then you can calculate the volume of the ingredients you need by using a ratio of 1:2. In order to make these calculations accurately though, you need to know your base volume. This is your original volume. In the example, this would be the original volume in the recipe. You also need to know your ratio.

1
Find your base volume. For example, assume you have a recipe that calls for 3 cups.
-
2
Determine the ratio. In the example, assume you want to cut the recipe by 1/4, or 1:4.
-
-
3
Divide the first number of the ratio by the second number of the ratio. In the example, 1 divided by 4 equals 0.25.
-
4
Multiply your ratio in decimal form by your base volume. In the example, 0.25 times 3 cups equals a new volume of 0.75 cups.
