A White Board Activity on Dressing for the Seasons

A whiteboard is either a traditional, physical board at the front of the classroom that the teachers and students write on or an interactive board that classrooms utilize. Either type is suitable for lessons on how to dress for the seasons because teachers can utilize graphics of clothing, weather symbols and maps to engage the students.
  1. Matching Games

    • Set up one side of the board with pictures of different seasons, such as a snowstorm, a bright shining sun and a big pile of leaves. On the other side, include pictures of a variety of different clothes such as scarves, mittens, bathing suits, flip flops and sweaters. The students will have to draw a line, whether it be physical on the traditional whiteboard or virtual on the interactive whiteboard, from the season to the clothing item or items that belong with that time of year.

    Interdisciplinary Connections

    • In a history class, show a map on the interactive whiteboard of the different areas of the world. Ask students to point to what season it currently is in a specific country. Once you have established the differences in season, point a country and ask students what types of clothing they might be wearing now. On a traditional white board, simply paste, hang or draw a map of the world. In a language class, have students engage in the matching activity, but use the target language words for the seasons and pieces of clothing instead of visual aids.

    Narrative Projects

    • On the interactive whiteboard, students are able to create a book with audio recording. Inside of a traditional book, have the students create a portion of a travel brochure that tells people what to wear during a certain season in a particular country. Another option is to ask the students to create a fashion guide, where they advise readers about the most practical and comfortable styles for the upcoming season. On a physical whiteboard, have the students draw signs and images that tell people what they should wear during a particular season in certain countries. Another option is to have them decorate the whiteboard with weather related images and then hang their travel brochures or magazines around the border.

    Dressing Characters

    • Create an image of a character on the interactive whiteboard along with several different outfits. Describe a season to the students and have one of them put the appropriate outfit on the character. You could also utilize a traditional white board for this activity. Simply put a cut out of a character on to the board, and have different cutouts of clothing available. The activity will then operate in the same way as the interactive whiteboard activity.
