How to Convert a Quad to a Triangle

A quad is a polygon with four sides and four corner angles that add up to 360 degrees. Quad is an abbreviation for quadrangle or quadrilateral. The quad can be viewed as an envelope for two triangles. The corners of a triangle always add up to 180 degrees. The two triangles enclosed within the quad share one side. This common side is also the diagonal of the quad. The remaining two sides of each triangle form the four sides of the quad. As a result of this geometric relationship, you can reduce any quad to a set of two triangles.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a quadrangle on a piece of paper. Use a ruler to ensure that the sides are straight. The corners do not need to be right angles. Cut out the quadrangle with the pair of scissors.

    • 2

Use the ruler to draw a diagonal line joining any two opposite corners of the quadrangle.

    • 3

Fold the quadrangle along the diagonal line. A triangle is formed on each side of the fold line. Cut along the fold line to produce two triangles. Note that the triangles may not be identical. The sizes and shapes of the triangles will depend on the angles and side lengths of the quad.
