How to Prepare for the California State Star Test

The California Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) program tests students in grades two through 11. The California Standards Tests (CST) are the main tests that most students take. They test proficiency in English-language arts, math and science. The California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA) is a version of the CST that have been modified for students who have cognitive disabilities. The California Modified Assessment (CMA) is another modified version of the CST that have been modified for students who have an Individual Education Plan. The Standards-based Tests in Spanish (STS) are a version of the CST that are presented in Spanish.

      Visit the website dedicated to the STAR program, which has been set up by the California Department of Education. This website not only gives you more information about the STAR program, but also contains sample test questions. Click on the Sample Test Questions link on the website menu. It will be the second option on the site menu located under the site banner.

      Choose your student's grade level, the subject you would like to get sample questions for and the performance level of your student. The subject options for grades one through six are English-language arts, math and science. Grade seven replaces science with Algebra I. Grades eight through 11 include additional courses like chemistry, history and physics. You can choose to get a mixture of questions from all performance levels. Click the Submit button.

      Look through the questions and decide which you want to review. The link to each question will give you the question and multiple-choice answers to the question and will tell you what percentage of students gave which answer on the test. The correct response will be green, while the wrong responses will be in black.

      Review the questions and the answers with your student. You may also choose to copy the questions on a separate sheet of paper and have your student answer them. You can then compare your student's answers to the answers provided to you on the website.
