How to Prepare for the Placement Test at Columbus State

The Columbus State Placement Test is used to determine the academic acumen of incoming students. It is administered by ACT and is not graded like a traditional test. Since the test is designed to gauge your educational needs, being prepared for it will allow the school to better assist you to achieve your educational goals.

      Know what subjects you will encounter on the COMPASS placement test at Columbus State University. The placement test will measure your efficiency in mathematics, reading, writing skills and essay writing.

      Go over a few study guides and test materials in the weeks leading up to your test date. You can download sample test questions from the COMPASS website at act.org/compass.

      Get plenty of rest the night before you take the placement test. It is recommended that you get at least 8 hours of sleep to recharge your body and mind. Also, eat a healthy breakfast on the morning of the test.

      Arrive at the testing site at least 20 minutes before testing time. Use this time to go to the restroom, get a drink of water, collect your test materials and mentally prepare for the test.

      Read every question and answer all questions on the test carefully. You are not penalized for wrong answers, so choose your best guess and move on.

      Practice for the essay writing section by reading college essays. You should be able to find college essay collections at your local bookstore. If not, inquire about essay papers at the English department of Columbus State University. Practice preparing an essay outline and work on your spelling and grammar.
