How to Not Be a Victim of Verbal Bullying

Bullies might put other people down to make themselves feel better or get attention. Sometimes, bullies aren't even aware that their behavior is wrong. Verbal bullying can make the target feel isolated, hurt and depressed. Long-term impacts include low self-esteem. However, you can take control of your destiny and avoid becoming a victim of verbal bullying. Remember that you didn't do anything to deserve this treatment. You are too special to let a mean person ruin your day.

Instructions

    • 1

Stay surrounded by other people. Bullies usually don't pick on people who are in groups, according to The University of Tennessee.

    • 2

Keep calm and ignore the bullying. Displays of anger or fear can egg on the bully. Take a deep breath and avoid focusing on what the bully says.

    • 3

Walk away. Showing the bully that he does not have power over you can make him stop the verbal abuse.

    • 4

Make a joke, if possible. If the bully picks on you for wearing a certain outfit or being short, thank her and say, "I'm glad you noticed," recommends PBS Kids.

    • 5

Say to the bully in an assertive and calm voice, "Stop making fun of me." Bullies thrive on hurting the feelings of people. Standing up to the bully and showing him that you're not afraid might be enough to make him stop.

    • 6

Tell an authority figure so that the bully can be punished. Verbal bullying is not okay and you shouldn't have to deal with it alone.
