How to Use a Camera for Classroom Observations

Cameras are often used to capture objects, people and elements in everyday life. Taking photos of what is appealing to the eye can create stunning visual art or a sense of nostalgia. However, cameras are not only limited to creating art. Cameras, whether film, digital or video, are also useful in the classroom. Use a camera for classroom observations during the school year. Become familiar with the personality of each student to create a successful learning environment based on the class's behavior.

Interview each student on the first day of class with a video camera, and record the interview to use the video as a reference tool. Ask each student about his or her interests, home life and educational goals. Use the interview to help accommodate each student's learning style or preference and enrich the learning experience. The footage may also be used to improve class curriculum to fit the class's personality.

    • 2

Utilize the video camera in the classroom to observe student behavior. Position the camera in an area of the classroom that captures all of the students. Use the video as a reference when seating students in the classroom to create a better learning environment, or to observe student behavior when the teacher is absent from the class.

    • 3

Observe and take pictures of students reading, writing and completing projects conducted in the classroom with a digital camera. Capture images of student activities throughout the year, and use the images in a digital presentation or book to show parents and faculty the class's academic progress.

    • 4

Set up a video camera in the classroom to record school conferences during the school year. Use the recorded information presented by parents during the conference as a reference to improve curriculum for students with learning disabilities, or students who are experiencing a difficult time in class.

Supply students with digital cameras to use as an observational tool in the classroom. Instruct each student to take pictures of objects that will be on upcoming exams, and use the photographs as a visual study aid. For example, tell each student to take photos of plants and organisms observed in biology class. Then print and label each photo to use as a reference.
