How to Translate a Percentage into GPA

Your grades are usually expressed to you in one of two ways: using a letter grade or a percentage. The way your grades are expressed often depends on your teacher. Some teachers prefer to give students their actual percentage as a grade, such as 87 percent instead of marking the grade as a B. Receiving your grades as a percentage instead of a letter does not change your overall grade, and percentages are easily turned into letter grades to calculate your grade point average, or GPA.

Instructions

    • 1

      Obtain your grades for each class. If your teacher provides them in a percentage form, use the following chart to convert your grades to letter grades, though some schools may use a slightly different scale.

      A = 90 to 100

      B = 80 to 89

      C = 70 to 79

      D = 60 to 69

      F = 59 and below

    • 2

      Start calculating your GPA by giving each of your letter grades a numerical value using a standard GPA conversion chart:

      A = 4 points

      B = 3 points

      C = 2 points

      D = 1 point

      F= no value

    • 3

      Add the numerical value of each of your letter grades and divide the total by the number of classes you are taking. For example, if you have five classes and a B in every class you have 15 points. Divide 15 by five for a GPA of 3.0.
