How to Find a GPA With Number Grades

Colleges and universities use a different grading system than that of high schools. Grade point averages can range from 4.3 which translates as an A+, to 0.0, representing a failing, incomplete or unsatisfactory grade. A student's postsecondary grade point average (GPA) is often listed on resumes and transcripts, and depending on the type of career you choose, may be taken into consideration during the hiring process. The GPA is a cumulative average of all grades from each class throughout a student's college journey.

Instructions

    • 1

      Transfer each number grade to its letter grade equivalent. Courses may have different grade designations so check your syllabus or ask your professor for more information.

      A+ = 97 to 100 percent

      A = 94 to 96 percent

      A- = 90 to 93 percent

      B+ = 87 to 89 percent

      B = 84 to 86 percent

      B- = 80 to 83 percent

      C+ = 77 to 79 percent

      C = 74 to 76 percent

      C- = 70 to 73 percent

      D+ = 67 to 69 percent

      D = 64 to 66 percent

      D- = 60 to 63 percent

      F or U = 0 to 59 percent

    • 2

      Translate the letter grade to a decimal number of quality points according to your college or university's grade point system. Typically, this translates as follows:

      A+ = 4.3

      A = 4.0

      A- = 3.7

      B+ = 3.3

      B = 3.0

      B- = 2.7

      C+ = 2.3

      C = 2.0

      C- = 1.7

      D+ = 1.3

      D = 1.0

      D- = 0.7

      F = 0.0

    • 3

      Multiply each quality point equivalent to your letter grade by the number of credit hours for the corresponding course. For example:

      Biology 101 = Score 89 percent = Letter grade B+ = Point equivalent = 3.3

      3.3 x 4 credit hours = 13.2 quality points

      Repeat this process for each course.

    • 4

      Add each course's quality points together and divide the total by the number of credit hours attempted.

      Example:

      Biology 101 (4 credits) = 13.2 quality points

      Communications (3 credits) = 12.0 quality points

      Algebra II (3 credits) = 9.0 quality points

      History I (3 credits) = 11.1 quality points

      Intro to Music (3 credits) = 8.1 quality points

      13.2 + 12.0 + 9.0 + 11.1 + 8.1 = 53.4 total quality points

      4 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 =16 credit hours

      53.4 / 16 = 3.34 Grade Point Average
