Organize teachers and school staff members. Assign each teacher a task or role for the Olympic events such as helping with setup, music, food and cleanup. Also encourage teachers to allot time in class for students to prepare banners and flags for the event.
Meet with coaches and physical education instructors to determine appropriate competitions for the students. Choose a wide array of individual and team events, such as short- and long-distance running, relay running, discus throw, long jump, soccer, basketball and kickball. For liability (and practical) reasons, avoid sports such as gymnastics, in which most students are not properly trained to perform without a spotter.
Plan an opening ceremony in which the students proceed out to the competition field as background music plays. Assign one student to carry a mock torch, and a representative from each homeroom class to carry a flag representing that class.
Schedule the competitive events over the course of an entire morning, so all the events will be completed in time for a medal ceremony before the end of the school day. Have physical education teachers conduct preliminary competitions or simply select students for each event, based upon their performance in gym class. Schedule some events concurrently to accommodate them all. For instance, a basketball game can take place at the same time as track and field events.
Plan for a lunch and a medal ceremony in the afternoon. Arrange for international foods and cuisines to be served in the spirit of the Olympic games. Assign a few students to announce winners and present medals. Award a gold, silver and bronze medal, respectively, to the top three competitors in each event.
