Before any type of water treatment or chemical adjustment can be applied to pool water, it's necessary to know the volume of water you're working with. Applying too much of an additive can be harmful or damaging. Applying too little of a chemical means it won't be effective in treating the problem. Calculating the water volume ensures additives are correctly measured and diluted to achieve maximum effectiveness without wasting chemicals.
Instructions

1
Measure the width of the rectangle.
-
2
Measure the length of the rectangle.
-
-
3
Measure the depth of the water at the deepest end.
-
4
Measure the depth of the water at the shallow end.
-
5
Add the two depth measurements together and divide by two. This is the average depth.
-
6
Multiply the answer in Step 5 by the length and width (depth x length x width). This is the volume of water.
