How to Get the Most Out of Mentoring

A teacher's first year in the classroom can be daunting. Mentors offer new teachers support by identifying strengths, modeling best practices, and suggesting areas for growth. While good mentors check in frequently and act as resources throughout the course of the school year, it is up to new teachers to make the most of the relationship. With responsibilities such as test administration, parent conferences, open houses and report cards, teachers who seek out advice from seasoned educators may find they are able to develop sound professional goals and improve their own practices effectively.

Instructions

    • 1

Observe your mentor in practice. Watch everything he or she does, his or her interaction with students, language choices, and intonation. Think about why your mentor is making particular decisions. Remember strategies and habits you emulate. Acknowledge methods and choices you disagree with as well.

    • 2

Meet with your mentor. Set up weekly sessions so you can be sure to have regular interaction. Choose a topic of conversation or make it a simple chat session. Create a list of questions to ask or thoughts to share during your meeting. Take notes and reflect on your meeting afterward.

    • 3

Develop professional goals to help you improve your practice. Ask for advice on what goals might benefit you most as a new teacher. Talk to your mentor about what he or she knows now that he or she did not know as a new teacher. Ask what were the struggles and what should you be striving to accomplish.

    • 4

Invite your mentor to visit. Allow your mentor to sit in your classroom and watch you teach. Ask him or her to take notes and give you feedback about your strengths and weaknesses. Think about how to implement some of your mentor's ideas and then invite him or her back at a later date to judge your improvement.

    • 5

Connect on a personal level. Get to know your mentor and allow him or her to find out more about you too. Connecting with your mentor will strengthen your ability to work together effectively. Give positive feedback. Compliment your mentor on the ways he or she has been helpful. Let your mentor know you appreciate the time and effort he or she has made. By sharing what has been helpful you will encourage your mentor to continue supporting you.
