How to Build a Small Aquatic Ecosystem

An aquatic ecosystem is a marine environment, in which plants and animals interact with water and chemicals to sustain life. An aquatic ecosystem may be as small as a puddle or as large as an ocean. To observe an aquatic ecosystem at work, create your own small aquarium with a combination of water, plants, animals and nonliving things.

Things You'll Need

  • Glass tank with lid
  • Stones or pebbles
  • Shells (natural)
  • Aquatic plants -- 4 elodea plants, duckweed
  • Goldfish
  • Snails
  • Shrimp
  • Fish food

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the bottom of a glass tank with small stones or pebbles. Place a handful of stones inside two or three shells, to weigh them down at the bottom of the tank.

    • 2

Plant the elodea plants inside the tank, by anchoring the base of plants in between the stones. These submerged plants will produce nutrients and release them into the water.

    • 3

Fill the tank with clean, purified water until it's 2 inches from the top.

    • 4

Add a handful of duckweed to the aquarium. These green, seed-bearing leaves will float on the surface, promoting the growth of algae and plankton.

    • 5

Drop two goldfish inside the tank, one male and one female. Add two snails and two shrimp.

    • 6

Add a pinch of fish food to the tank, and close the lid. Repeat feedings every two to three days, as needed.
